SALINAS, Calif. - The UNLV women's golf team shot a second-round 309 and sit in 14th place after Tuesday's play at the Spartan Invitational at Corral de Tierra Golf Course.

After a disappointing opening round of 321, the Rebels rebounded with improved efforts throughout the lineup. By closing the gap between themselves and the next few teams ahead, the Rebels put themselves within striking distance of head-to-head victories in the tourney's final day. They sit in 14th place.

Again the Rebels were paced by freshman Hwanhee Lee. Despite battling a broken hearing aid just before the start of Tuesday's round, Lee managed to fire a 76. She is seven-over after two rounds and is tied for 27th individually.

One day after shooting matching 83s, Erin Borcherts and Tina Mabanta turned in another equal round. Both players carded 77s on Tuesday and sit 16-over par, tied for 55th.

Also in the individual mix at 16-over is freshman Christine Hentzner. While Hentzner's 80 in the first round was the lineup's second-best score of the day, her 80 on Tuesday was not figured in to the team score.

Autumn Monteiro sits 71st after two rounds, but shaved seven strokes off her opening round score. Rounds of 86 and 79 leave her 21-over.

California retained its lead in the team race, but no longer enjoys the five-stroke cushion it posted on Monday. The Golden Bears lead New Mexico State by a single stroke after firing 300 on Tuesday. NMSU turned in the best team score in the second round, a three-over 291.

In the individual race, South Carolina's Kristy McPherson moved into the lead after shooting 69 in the second round to move to four-under. She has a three-shot advantage over two other players.

Wednesday's final round will commence at 8:00 a.m. PST.
