TUCSON, Ariz. - The UNLV men's golf team climbed one spot to eight place after the second round of the U.S. Collegiate Championships on Saturday.
Battling heavy winds at Tucson National Golf Course, the Rebels shot a second-round 300. Although the daily total was four strokes worse than Friday's 296, it was better relative to the rest of the teams competing, and as a results, UNLV was able to leap past Northwestern on the leaderboard.
With its two-day total of 596, UNLV trails Texas, the first- and second-round leader, by 28 strokes.
Oklahoma State's Hunter Mahan continues to lead the individual race, riding Friday's 10-under 62. He carded a one-over 73 on Saturday andf survived a scare from the Longhorns John Klauk, who crept to within two strokes after a three-under 70.
The Rebels' top individual was freshman Ryan Moore, who is tied for 19th at three-over par. One stroke behind him is Brien Davis, tied for 23rd, and Clark Corbett is just one more stroke back, tied for 29th.
J.C. Deacon, although tied for 58th individually at 13-over, rebounded from a first-round 83 to contribute a 74 to the Rebels' Saturday total.
Brandon Askew sits one stroke ahead of Deacon, tied for 55th after a second-straight 78.
The Rebels will conclude play at the U.S. Collegiate Championships on Sunday.
