TUCSON, Ariz. - The UNLV men's golf team could not improve its position on the leaderboard on Sunday, remaining in eight place after a final-round 290 at the U.S. Collegiate Championships at Tucson National Golf Club.
The Rebels (296-300-290--886) did turn out their best team round of the event, but fell four strokes behind Houston (280-301-301--882) for seventh place and 27 strokes behind Texas (278-290-291--859), who led from wire to wire.
Oklahoma State's Hunter Mahan (62-73-69--204) made a first-round 10-under-par score stand up, holding off Arizona's Chris Nallen (65-73-68--206) and Texas' John Klauk (67-70-71--208) for the win.
Ryan Moore (73-74-75--222) and Clark Corbett (74-75-73--222) tied for Rebel top honors in 24th place, one stroke shy of a top-20 finish.
However, Brandon Askew (78-78-69--225) was the hottest player in the lineup, carding a three-under 69 to salvage a tie for 36th place.
J.C. Deacon's (83-74-73--230) one-over 73 counted toward the Rebels' Sunday total and lifted him into a tie for 54th place. Brien Davis (71-77-80--228) slipped to his worst round and tied for 48th.
The Rebels have just one last tune-up on the schedule before the conference championships. UNLV heads to the Kepler Invitational next weekend, April 12-14, at Ohio State's Scarlet Course.
