Rebels Charge To The Top

May 17, 2002

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - UNLV not only made up the five strokes it was down to Texas after the first round of the NCAA Men's Golf West Regional at UNM's Championship Course, but it also managed to hold off a hungry pack and come out on top after second-round play on Friday.

The Rebels' four-over 292 was nearly the best round of the day and good enough to hold off Fresno State, Washington, Arizona and San Diego State for taking advantage of the Longhorns' fall. UNLV leads Fresno State by one and the rest by no more than six.

UNLV sophomore Brandon Askew, who sat just one stroke back entering Friday's play, slipped to a tie for 13th after a second-round 76 left him at one-over.

Ryan Moore is tied with Askew at one-over, shooting 74 on Friday. J.C. Deacon was the Rebel on the charge, using a 69 to move into a tie for 29th, three strokes over par.

Brien Davis rounded out the Rebels' round, shooting 73. At four-over, he is tied for 36th. Clark Corbett's 78 left him in a tie for 87th, nine-over par.

Final-round play will begin on Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. MDT.
