LAS VEGAS - UNLV women's basketball head coach Regina Miller, who led the Lady Rebels to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in eight seasons in 2002, has had her contract extended by three years, athletics director John Robinson announced Friday.
Miller inked a deal that will keep her on the UNLV bench at least through the 2004-05 season.
"This is a new era of women's basketball and I have been very impressed with the direction of Regina's program," Robinson said. "We are committed to women's basketball at UNLV and this contract is evidence of that."
The three-year extension includes base salaries of $124,592 in 2002-03, $135,000 in 2003-04 and $140,400 in 2004-05. She will also receive compensation for television, radio and public appearances.
In addition, there are bonuses in the contract for winning the conference championship, qualifying for the NCAA Tournament, winning national coach of the year honors, as well as academic and graduation achievements by her team.
"I am delighted with this extension," Miller said. "The commitment that the administration has shown, not only to myself, but the Lady Rebel program as a whole is outstanding and I am appreciative of that. The future is bright and we are looking forward to continuing to strive toward our goal of being a nationally competitive program. We had a great season last year and I owe a lot of gratitude to our student-athletes, as well as the fans who continue to support us and help us grow each year."
Miller led the Lady Rebels to a 23-8 overall record in 2001-02, which included their eighth all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament (first since 1994). She also led UNLV to the 2002 Mountain West Conference Tournament's championship game for the first time.
She coached, arguably, the best female student-athlete in UNLV history in Linda Fr?hlich, who earned All-America honors on the court as well as first team Academic All-America honors in the classroom and became the school's first player to be drafted into the WNBA as she was taken 26th overall by the New York Liberty.
Miller came to UNLV in 1998 and inherited a women's basketball team that had won only four games in each of its previous three seasons. She has earned a 76-41 (.650) mark in her four seasons as head coach of the Lady Rebels.
