LAS VEGAS - Three new assistant coaches join the UNLV women's basketball program for the upcoming 2002-03 season as announced by head coach Regina Miller Tuesday.
Frozena Jerro, Anthony Turner and Cherie Hogg were named to the coaching staff, replacing former assistant coaches Pat Charity, Staci Schulz and Brooke Ingalls, who resigned to pursue other career opportunities. Charity recently accepted a similar position at Long Beach State.
Jerro, former head women's basketball coach at Cal State Northridge, brings nearly ten years of coaching expertise to the Lady Rebels. While at CSUN, Jerro compiled a 48-41 (.539) winning record over four and half years and guided the Matadors to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 1999. She was named Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year in 1999 as the Matadors won the conference regular season and tournament titles. Jerro first began her coaching career as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Houston from 1993-95. A 1993 graduate of Arizona State University, Jerro played two seasons for the Sun Devils after transferring from Saint Mary's College.
"Frozena brings extensive experience and knowledge in the area of recruiting with her strong ties in California," Miller said. "She has also taken a team to the NCAA Tournament and knows how to win."
Turner, a former two-year assistant coach at San Diego State, will be in charge of scouting for the Lady Rebels. While at SDSU, Turner assisted with the day-to-day operations of the program as well as with recruiting, scouting reports, film exchange, court instruction, conditioning and working with the guards. A 2000 graduate of the University of Colorado, Turner played collegiately at Westminster College in Fulton, Mo., before enrolling at CU. While at Boulder, Turner served as a student assistant for the women's basketball program during the 1999-2000 season. In that same year, Turner also served as an assistant coach for the Mile High Magic AAU girls basketball team.
"Anthony is a great addition to our program, because of his familiarity with the Mountain West Conference," Miller said. "He will coordinate our scouting efforts, along with player development."
Former Lady Rebel standout Cherie Hogg returns to her alma mater after playing professionally in Europe and coaching club basketball in her native Australia for the last eight years. During her two-year UNLV career (1992-94), Hogg became only the fourth Lady Rebel in school history to compile 100 assists and 100 steals in a single season. She still holds school records for most steals in a season (129), best three-point shooting percentage in a season (.456), most steals in a game (11) and ranks ninth all-time in assists (319). As a senior, she earned All-Big West Conference first team honors and received honorable mention recognition as a junior. Hogg was also a member of UNLV's 1994 NCAA Tournament team.
"It is great to have an alumna return to the program here at UNLV," Miller said. "Cherie has competed at the highest level as a college and professional athlete and will provide us with input from a player's perspective."
In other athletics department news ... Diane Dickerson, UNLV's Associate Athletics Director for Development, has announced that she will donate her salary back into the athletics department and stay on in her current role, acting as a volunteer. She will remain in her office in the Thomas & Mack Center with all of the same responsibilities that she acquired when she was hired in January.
"I am still going out and raising funds for athletics and will continue to work with Dean Harrold on fundraising projects," Dickerson said. "We have begun work on establishing the John Robinson Inner Circle group, which will help in our efforts to assist the athletics department financially."
"Diane has been a very valuable member of our staff and will continue to be so," athletics director and head football coach John Robinson said. "Her focus is to be working with the community and we think she will continue to have a big impact on the things we are trying to accomplish here."
