Women's Soccer Ties Kansas In Season Opener

Aug. 30, 2002

Box Score

LAWRENCE, Kansas - In the 73rd minute, freshman Michelle Cowles (Littleton, Colo.) headed the ball off a cross pass from senior Kelly Janke (Bellflower, Calif.) to give the UNLV women's soccer team a 2-2 tie with 2001 NCAA Women's College Cup participant Kansas in the 2002 season opener at Lawrence, Kansas.

Things started off rough for the Rebels in the first half of play. Kansas quickly came out in-front with two consecutive goals from Jayhawks Monica Brothers (1:01) and Caroline Smith (15:35) for the early 2-0 lead.

Looking to notch a goal before halftime, sophomore Annii Magliulo (Pengrove, Calif.) did so from the inside 18 off a free kick from junior Tania Lee (Thornton, Colo.) to put the Rebels on the scoreboard in the 36th minute. Cowles, a redshirt in 2001, scored the game-tying goal late in the second half. Two 10-minute overtime periods followed, with both teams not being able to find a game-winner.

Sophomore Desiree Kelly (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Kansas' Meghan Miller each played 110 minutes in goal with five saves. Last season, Kansas defeated UNLV, 4-2, in San Diego.

UNLV and Kansas start the year off at 0-0-1. The Rebels continue their road trip through the Midwest with a non-conference game versus Drury on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 11 a.m. in St. Louis, Mo.
