Rebels Earn A Little Respect

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The UNLV women's golf team maintained its pace and position at the Dick McGuire Invitational on Saturday, finishing ninth overall after a final-round 309.

Freshman Elena Kurokawa owned the hot hand on Saturday, firing just the fourth par-or-better round in school history with an even-par 73. The impressive loop completed her first collegiate tournament, and the freshman phenom tied for 28th.

Hwanhee Lee ended one stroke and two positions ahead of Kurokawa. After opening the tournament with a career-best 71, Lee added rounds of 81 and 78 to finish 11-over par.

Christine Hentzner and Sunny Oh fired matching 79s to round out the Rebels' 309. Erin Borcherts closed with an 84.

Host New Mexico won on its own course, defeating the field be seven strokes. Pepperdine's Katherine Hull shared medalist honors with Oklahoma's Lisa Meldrum, both shooting a respectable eight-under.

The Rebels will be inaction again in eight days when they return to New Mexico to compete in the Price's Give 'Em Five Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M., on Oct. 7-9.
