UNLV-Kansas Game To Feature Tribute To America

Sept. 4, 2002

LAS VEGAS - In memory of the terrible events of last September 11, this week's UNLV football game will feature a Tribute to America at Sam Boyd Stadium as part of the first-ever meeting of the Rebels and the Kansas Jayhawks.

The first 15,000 fans will receive a free American mini-flag to show their patriotism in the stands. Also, the school is honoring all heroes both local and national by offering two free tickets to any members of the armed forces, police, fire or EMT with a valid I.D. or badge.

Those tickets can be picked up through Friday at the Thomas & Mack Center box office or on the day of the game at the Sam Boyd Stadium box office.

Taking part in the pre-game festivities is the Clark County Fire Dept., the Las Vegas Fire & Rescue, Henderson and Metro Police departments and the U.S. Navy. Interactive displays outside the stadium will include specialized vehicles and equipment such as the Fire Safety House, fire engines, police motorcycles and a Naval Flight Simulator for all ages to enjoy. Rebel Experience opens at 4 p.m. with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Nellis Air Force Base Honor Guard will present the colors and a patriotic halftime show will feature the Star of Nevada Marching Band along with local entertainer Dian Diaz and heroes from nine local VFWs and public safety agencies on the field.
