STORRS, Conn. - No. 18 nationally ranked Boston College edged past the UNLV men's soccer team, 3-2, in double overtime Friday afternoon in the first game of the 2002 adidas / UConn Soccer Classic held at Morrone Stadium on the campus of the University of Connecticut.
In the first half of play, the Rebels jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after freshman Rod Dyachenko (Vancouver, Wash.) found a cross pass from junior transfer Espen Sjoevoll (Heimdal, Norway) and shot the ball above BC goalkeeper Kyle Singer at 37:31.
After the break, the Eagles made an immediate two-goal, second half comeback courtesy of Kenny Adams (46:15) and Robert Thompson (48:49) to turn the score around, 2-1. Needing a game-tying goal, sophomore Alex Hernandez (Indio, Calif.) cleared a shot upper middle in the 58th minute to even the score for the Rebels.
Two overtime periods later followed. Boston College's Neil Krause sealed the victory for the Big East Conference powers in the 116th minute on a golden goal. The game marked a first time meeting between both schools.
Senior goalkeeper Justin Dennis (Scottsdale, Ariz.), who played 87.32 minutes with two saves, was accessed a red card in the final minutes of regulation and would be replaced in goal by freshman Ben Stollerman (Park City, Utah) for the remainder of the match. Stollerman had two saves in overtime.
UNLV goes to 2-1 on the young season, while BC improved to 2-0. The Rebels next face No. 16 Connecticut on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 2 p.m. (EST).
