STORRS, Conn. - Not this year. No. 16-ranked Connecticut, scarred by a 6-1 upset last season in Las Vegas, did not let the UNLV men's soccer team do them in a second consecutive time handing the Rebels a 5-0 shutout in the final game of the 2002 adidas / UConn Soccer Classic Sunday afternoon at Morrone Stadium.
Before a crowd of 2,532, the Rebels would play without their starting goalkeeper Justin Dennis (Scottsdale, Ariz.), who was accessed a red card in Friday's 3-2 loss to No. 18 Boston College. Freshman Ben Stollerman (Park City, Utah) would take over net duties for the Rebels.
Three penalty kicks were awarded to Connecticut during the course of the match, two on hand balls in the goal box. Junior Cesar Cuellar successfully netted two PKs at 7:14 and 51:27, while teammate Rui Fernandes connected on the third at 68:43.
The Huskies kept its scoring spree going in the second half. In the 75th minute, Michael Mordocco scored on the give-and-go from Drew Brown and Fernando Morales. A follow-up goal by Morales at 80:26 sealed the deal for the Huskies.
Stollerman made five saves in goal, while UConn goalkeeper Adam Schuerman claimed his second straight shutout victory with three saves. The Huskies (1-1) outshot the Rebels, 18-7.
Senior defender Reggie Bolden (Jacksonville, Ark.) was named to the All-Tournament Team.
UNLV (2-2) will next travel to the UNM Tournament on Sept. 13 and 15 in Albuquerque, N.M. The Rebels will take on Evansville on Friday, Sept. 13 at 5:30 p.m. and Cal Poly SLO on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 11 a.m.
