LAS VEGAS - Randy Poggio scored twice, including one to seal the game with just under two minutes left to give San Jose State a 2-0 win over UNLV in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's soccer action on Thursday night from Peter Johann Field. The Rebels fell to 4-10, 1-2 in the conference with the loss, while San Jose State remained in first place in the conference at 4-0, 9-3-2 overall.
Poggio scored his first goal of the game at the 25:43 mark, when he took a pass from Aaron Perego in the midfield and took off on a breakaway, sending a shot just past UNLV goalkeeper Peter Clitheroe's hands for a 1-0 Spartan advantage. Late in the second half, the Rebels appeared to have tied the score when Victor 'Boomer' Arbelaez took a loose ball off a corner kick and sent a shot towards the goal, but the ball was ruled not to have crossed into the goal. UNLV kept attacking, but couldn't get past Spartan goalkeeper Tyler Tratten, who finished with eight saves. Poggio sealed the game for San Jose State at the 88:18 mark, as his header off of Lee Sandwina's throw-in sailed to the top right corner of the goal, and fell just over UNLV's Matt Johnson for the second goal of the night.
Clitheroe posted three saves in goal for UNLV in 60:10 before being injured in a collision during a corner kick. Johnson played the final 29:50, and collected four saves.
The Rebels will play their final home game of the season on Sunday, as UNLV will play Sacrament State in a Senior Day matchup at Noon at Peter Johann Field.
