TEMPE, Ariz. - UNLV's women's tennis contingent experienced an up and down first day at the Arizona State Thunderbirds Invitational, which kicked off Friday at the Whiteman Tennis Center.

Lady Rebel Gyorgyi Zsiros played through sickness to win in the first round, 7-5, 6-1 over Ebru Burduroglu of host ASU but had to default her second-round match to Cal's Jody Sheldt.

Two other UNLV players won their first-round matches and fell later in the day. Claire Smith downed Cindy Sureephong of ASU 6-2, 1-6, 6-3, but then lost to Shawna Zuccarini of Purdue 6-2, 7-6.

Anne Claire Ortiz Luis downed Lauren Colalillo of ASU 6-2, 6-4 before falling to second-seeded Julia Smith of Duke 6-3, 6-1.

Cindy Treber, facing the top seed, lost in the first round 6-0, 6-2 to Duke's Saras Arasu, but then rebounded in the consolation draw, 6-3, 6-3 over Judith Diaz of Kansas State.

Also, both of UNLV's doubles teams lost in the first round.

Singles consolation play continues Saturday.
