LOS ANGELES - Loyola Marymount shot 52.6 percent for the game and held off a late rally to post a 76-64 win over UNLV on Monday night in women's collegiate basketball action from Los Angeles, Calif., in Gersten Pavilion. The Lady Rebels saw their four-game win streak snapped as they dropped to 5-2 on the season, while LMU won a school record seventh straight to improve to 7-1 for the year.
After a three-pointer from Sheena Moore brought UNLV within four, 49-45 with 11:29 left, the Lady Rebels hit a scoring drought. They were outscored 10-2 over the next five minutes as the Lions built up a 59-47 lead with just over six minutes left. Just when it looked like Loyola Marymount had the game in hand, UNLV ran off eight straight points over three straight possessions on a Moore trey, a jumper from RanDee Henry, and a three-point play from Moore to again cut the lead to four, 59-55 with 4:59 on the clock. The Lions held strong however, responding by scoring nine of the next 10 points to put the game away, taking a 68-56 advantage with 2:35 left in the game.
Loyola Marymount began the game on fire, hitting seven of its first 10 shots on the way to building a 25-14 lead. The return of Moore to the Lady Rebels sparked the team however, as she hit a three-pointer and assisted on two more to help spark a UNLV rally. She added another three, and Henry converted a layup to give her 17 points in the first half and complete an 18-6 spurt that give the Lady Rebels their first lead of the game, 32-31 with thirty seconds left on the clock. LMU's Kate Murray answered with a layup with 23 seconds left to give the Lions a 33-32 edge heading into halftime.
RanDee Henry led all scorers with 29 points for the Lady Rebels on 11-of-17 shooting. She also added 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Sheena Moore came off the bench after a six-game absence to set a new career-high with 17 points, including four three-pointers, and she also set new career highs in rebounds (seven) and assists (six). Sherry McCracklin saw her streak of double-doubles come to an end, as she was held to just 3-of-9 from the floor for eight points, and had just six rebounds. The Lady Rebels were held to 37.5 percent (24-of-64) from the floor, and were outrebounded (38-34) for the first time this season. They did hit a season-high seven shots from downtown (7-of-21, 33.3 percent).
Kate Murray paced Loyola Marymount with 21 points, while Adrianne Slaughter posted 14 points, and Mary Turner 12. LMU shot 52.6 percent (30-57) for the night, the highest mark by a UNLV opponent this season.
The Lady Rebels will return to action on Friday, Dec. 19, as they host Texas San-Antonio at 7:30 pm in Cox Pavilion.
