Kerrigan Puts The T-Birds Away

Feb. 17, 2003

LAS VEGAS - Jackie Kerrigan tossed a four-hit shutout, her third of the season, to lead the UNLV softball team to a 1-0 victory over Southern Utah at Eller Media Stadium on Monday.

For the second time this season, Kerrigan won a 1-0 ball game, and improved to 5-3 on the season in doing so.

The Rebels (5-10) produced only one hit offensively and didn't even need it to score the winning run. Bridget Byrne led off the game with a single to center, the first and only hit allowed by SUU starter Lacee LePrey.

It was a leadoff walk in the fourth that set up the game's only run. Carrie Bayless drew the walk, rounded first and cruised into second against a napping T-Bird defense. Bayless stole third on the next pitch and came into score on a ground ball by Morgan Bostwick.

SUU (3-7) outplayed the Rebels offensively, collecting four hits in the game. However, the Rebels turned it on defensively, playing errorless ball behind Kerrigan's pitching. She permitted runners to scoring position only in the fifth inning, but tallied three of her five strikeouts in the same inning to escape the jam.
