Rebels Charge After Tourney's Best Round

Feb. 20, 2003

WAHAIWA, Hawaii - The UNLV men's golf team shot the lowest team round of the tournament, carding a nine-under 279 in the second round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate on Thursday to climb from ninth place into a tie for fourth.

UNLV is just four strokes off Arizona, who leads the event for the second straight day. The Wildcats followed yesterday's 280 with a team 283.

Four Rebels turned in sub-par scorecards, highlighted by Ryan Moore's blistering 66. Moore, who shot 77 in the opening round, climbed from 84th to 23rd by firing the best single round of the tourney.

Three of Moore's teammates sit ahead of him on the leaderboard. JC Deacon held his position in seventh place with an even par round on Thursday, and Travis Whisman joined him at three-under for the tourney after a second-round 70. Both are four strokes off the pace set by Utah's Casey Fowler.

One stroke behind the Rebel tandem is senior Brien Davis, who is in 16th place after identical rounds of 71.

Mitch Carlson trimmed four strokes off yesterday's 78 and is tied for 77th overall.

Final round play in the John A. Burns Intercollegiate will begin with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. HST.
