SALT LAKE CITY - The UNLV women's basketball team was held to its lowest scoring production of the season in a 58-39 loss to league leader Utah Saturday afternoon at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Utah's Shona Thorburn scored a game-high 25 points for the Utes shooting 7-of-14 from the floor and connecting on 10-of-12 free throw attempts, while freshman Kim Smith added 16 points to take the series sweep over the Lady Rebels.
Senior Constance Jinks (Chicago, Ill.) scored a team-high 10 points for UNLV, which now puts her third all-time in scoring with 1,692 career points. She surpassed former Lady Rebel Pauline Jordan (1987-90) on the list, who was formerly third with 1,688 career points.
Freshman Sheena Moore (Lansing, Mich.) made her first career start as a Lady Rebel, replacing senior starter Talisha Mitchell (Stockton, Calif.), who was unable to be with the team due to a family emergency. Moore and senior Julia Gray (Riverside, Calif.) scored nine apiece.
On Thursday night, Utah (20-4, 10-1 MWC) held San Diego State to a school record low of 22 points. A total of 25 fouls were called the entire game with UNLV committing 14 of its 16 in the second half of play, where the team shot 19 percent from the field (5-of-26).
The Lady Rebels held a four-point halftime advantage, 25-21, only to be outscored 37-14 by the Utes in the second.
UNLV (14-9, 5-5 MWC) hosts its last two home games of the season against New Mexico on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 7:35 p.m. and Air Force on Saturday, March 1 at 2 p.m. All games played at Cox Pavilion.
