AUSTIN, Texas - The UNLV women's golf team sits alone in eighth place after shooting 33-over par in the first round of the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational at The Hills Country Club on Sunday.

The Rebels are bunched in the middle of the 12-team pack, just five strokes out of fifth place and 26 shots behind first-round leader Oklahoma State.

The Cowgirls also boasted two of the day's top three finishers, but neither player could best the 67 fired by Texas' Jessica Reese. Reese led OSU's Christi Cano by four strokes after Sunday's round.

Paving the way for the Rebels was freshman Elena Kurokawa, who continued her excellent spring by firing a five-over 77 on the difficult course.

Two strokes and six places on the leaderboard behind Kurokawa was Hwanhee Lee, who sits tied for 22nd in the 70-player field.

Also scoring for UNLV were Young Pak, who shot 81, and Christine Hentzner, who carded 84. Erin Borcherts' 87 was not figured into the team total.

Second-round play will begin at 7:30 a.m. Monday.
