Six In Sixth Captures Top Seed For Rebels

March 8, 2003

LAS VEGAS - Pauline Glenn hit a walk-off home run to lead the UNLV softball team to a 9-1 victory over New Mexico State at Eller Media Stadium on Saturday.

Needing no less than an eight-run victory to earn the top seed in the bracket play portion of its home softball tournament, UNLV (11-13) scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, capped by Glenn's two-run shot.

The Rebels had managed a 3-1 lead through five and were outhit by the Aggies (2-25) before three walks and two big hits fueled the big inning. Aggie reliever Jennifer Bride walked three of the first four batters in the inning, including a bases-loaded pass to Morgan Bostwick for the inning's first run. Wendy Godwin then followed with a bases-clearing triple, putting the Rebels on top 7-1.

After Kacey Ellis grounded to second for the first out of the inning, Glenn delivered her third bomb of the year to straight away center, scoring Godwin and herself to end the game per the mercy rule.

Ellis pitched a complete game for the Rebels, scattering just five hits and permitting a single unearned run to pick up her second win of the season.

The win put UNLV in a three-way tie with Nevada-Reno and Utah State for the best record within the tourney at 2-1. Figuring in run differential, both UNLV and UNR stood at +9 for the weekend, and the Rebels claimed the first seed by virtue of their head-to-head over the Wolf Pack on Friday.

Nevada-Reno 4, Utah State 1
Utah State's Marcie Neff led off the game with a solo home run, but it was all Nevada-Reno from there. The Wolf Pack (10-9) took the lead with two runs in the third and tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth in cruising to a 4-1 victory. Utah State (2-9) collected just four more hits after the homer off UNR starter Candice Rainwater.
