LAS VEGAS - Beginning the day five strokes out of the lead, UNLV All-American Ryan Moore carded a five-under par 67 to win the Toyota Men's Collegiate Championship individual title by one stroke over four other players at Southern Highlands Golf Club on Sunday.
Moore (71-70-67-208), of Puyallup, Wash., held on to the lead on his home course, outlasting Alabama's Lars Brovold, TCU's Adam Rubinson, Clemson's D.J. Trahan and North Carolina State's Justin Walters, who all finished tied for second place at seven-under par.
Although not his first victory as an amateur, the win does mark the Rebel sophomore's first collegiate title. Moore won the U.S. Amateur Public Links last summer, earning an invitation to The Masters in April.
Moore's heroics, however, weren't enough to catapult the Rebels into the team crown. UNLV held down second place wire-to-wire, but it was Oklahoma State and not Texas who sat above them after Sunday's final round at the par-72, 7,381-yard Southern Highlands. The Cowboys shot seven-under par as a team for the day and leapt from eighth place to the tournament crown. UNLV followed by a single stroke at seven-under for the tourney.
Texas, who led after both of the first two rounds of play, slipped into a tie with top-ranked Clemson for third place at six-under.
UNLV senior Brien Davis and sophomore Travis Whisman joined Moore in the top 10. Davis (69-69-73-211), who began the day in third, placed ninth at five-under par after a round of 73. Whisman was the hottest Rebel on the afternoon, besting even Moore's 67 with a six-under 66 score. However, Whisman played as an individual, and his total did not count toward the Rebels' team effort.
Along with Moore's and Davis' scores, Ryan Posey (74-73-73-220) added a 73 and finished in 34th, and Mitch Carlson (69-74-76-219) contributed a 76 and finished in 32nd.
Rouding out the Rebel lineup was JC Deacon (73-76-77-226) in 64th. Troy Denton (77-75-71-223), also playing as an individual, finished in 51st.
The Rebels continue the 2003 season next weekend at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate in Austin, Texas.
