SUNRIVER, Ore. - The UNLV women's golf team held off an impressive charge by New Mexico in the second round of the Mountain West Conference Championship at the Meadows Course on Friday, and the two teams are tied for the lead heading into Saturday's final round.
The Rebels carded an impressive seven-over par 291 in the second round, bested only by the Lobos' blistering four-under 280. UNLV held a four-stroke lead when the day began, but New Mexico climbed from fourth place to first with its low round.
Individually, the Lobos' Katrina Leckovic was the key to their low round. Leckovic, who began the day one shot behind UNLV's Sunny Oh for the lead, fired a tournament-best 67. Oh shot 73 for the second straight day and fell to second place, five shots behind Leckovic.
Oh was the top of the Rebels' lineup, which placed all five players in the top 12. Elena Kurokawa was the Rebels' daily leader, matching her own school record with a round of 70. She is currently tied for third at five-over.
Christine Hentzner shot 72 and sits alone in seventh place, one shot behind Kurokawa. Erin Borcherts tossed a 76 into the team total, and Hwanhee Lee rounded out the lineup with a 77.
The day's round was played at the par-71, 5851-yard Meadows Course at the Sunriver Resort, which was cleared of the snow that forced Thursday's round to be played in nearby Bend, Ore. Saturday's final 18 holes are also slated for the Meadows Course and will begin at 10:00 a.m. PDT.
