Rebels Set For Postseason Debut

STORYLINE: The UNLV women's golf team competes in the postseason for the first time in its two-year history this week as it heads to Tempe, Ariz., for the NCAA West Regional. Hosted by Arizona State University, the 54-hole event will be played at at Karsten Golf Course (Par 72, 6,122 Yards) from Thursday, May 8 through Saturday, May 10 with 18 holes slated for each day. The tournament is one of three regional qualifying events used to determine the field for the NCAA Championship. The Rebels head to Tempe as the No. 10 seed in the West and must finish among the top eight in order to advance to the finals. The top two individuals not advancing with a team will also earn a bid to the NCAA Finals.

ABOUT UNLV: The Rebels enter this week ranked 31st in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index. They are playing their best golf of the season, coming off a second-place finish at the Mountain West Conference Championship and a team victory at the BYU Dixie Classic. Sunny Oh was the individual runner-up at the conference tourney, and all five Rebels finished in the top 10. Elena Kurokawa has been the hottest Rebel lately, finishing in the top 20 at five of her last six events.

THE FIELD: Arizona State University hosts 20 other teams at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz.: Bradley, Cal State Northridge, Denver, Illinois, Nevada, New Mexico State, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Oral Roberts, Oregon State, Pepperdine, Portland State, San Francisco, San Jose State, Southern Cal, Stanford, UCLA, UNLV, Washington and Washington State.

THE LINEUP: The Rebels' lineup for the NCAA West Regional will consist of Christine Hentzner, Hwanhee Lee, Elena Kurokawa, Sunny Oh and Erin Borcherts.

HEAD COACH MISSY RINGLER: UNLV women's golf head coach Missy Ringler is in her first year at UNLV. She took over for Kelley Hester, who left to become the head coach at Arkansas. An All-Big Eight golfer at Iowa State from 1990-95, Ringler spent the last three years as the head coach at the University of Minnesota. She and her husband, Lance, welcomed their new son, Landon, on January 11, 2003.

ON DECK: In order to continue their 2002-03 season, the Rebels must finish among the top eight teams at the Regional. If they do so, they would advance to the NCAA Finals, slated for May 21-24 at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Ind.
