Moore Chosen To Walker Cup Team

Aug. 11, 2003

FAR HILLS, N.J. - UNLV junior golfer Ryan Moore was one of eight players selected to the 10-man U.S. Walker Cup team, the USGA announced Monday.

Moore, 20, of Puyallup, Wash., becomes just the second Rebel ever chosen for the prestigious honor, joining Chris Riley, who played for the U.S. in the 1995 Walker Cup.

"I'm honored to be included in such an event," Moore said.

The Walker Cup, slated for Sept. 6-7 at the Ganton Golf Club in North Yorkshire, England, pits the top U.S. amateurs against their counterparts from Great Britain and Ireland. The match consists of 16 singles and eight foursomes matches. The U.S. leads the all-time series 31-6-1, but Great Britain and Ireland won the last two contests in 1999 and 2001.

Joining Moore on the U.S. squad are Bill Haas of Greer, S.C., Trip Kuehne of Dallas, Texas, Matt Hendrix of Aiken, S.C., Brock Mackenzie of Yakima, Wash., Chris Nallen of Hackettstown, N.J., Adam Rubinson of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Casey Wittenberg of Memphis, Tenn. The captain (coach) of the team is Bob Lewis, 59, of Pepper Pike, Ohio, a four-time Walker Cup team member and three-time USGA championship runner-up.

The final two members and alternate for the squad will be selected following the U.S. Amateur on Aug. 24.

"We're very proud of Ryan and all of his accomplishments, and the Walker Cup is certainly a testament to the caliber of player he has been," UNLV men's golf head coach Dwaine Knight said.
