LAS VEGAS - After trailing 2-0, Gonzaga rallied with three second half goals, including two in the final three minutes, to escape with a 3-2 victory over UNLV in men's collegiate soccer on Sunday from Peter Johann Field. Gonzaga, who scored the game-winner with just 46 seconds left in the match, improved to 5-3-1 on the year while UNLV dropped its second straight to fall to 3-7 on the season. The game was part of the UNLV/Fila Classic, and in the day's second game, Cal State Northridge (5-0-2) remained undefeated on the season with a 4-0 shutout of New Mexico (3-4-3).
UNLV struck quickly to begin the game, as Leandro Iocco dribbled into the box and sent a cross shot into the right post for a 1-0 advantage at 5:34. Ryan Cochrane assisted on the score. The Rebels added to their lead at the 39:36 mark, when Chris Henderson's long pass found Eduardo Arredondo, who passed off to Salvatore Wise for a shot from 15 yards out for a 2-0 UNLV lead.
That was the last of the scoring for the Rebels. Gonzaga drew a foul, and Scott Yuska sent the ensuing free kick curing towards the right side of the goal to make the score 2-1 at the 54:37 mark. With just under three minutes left in the game, the Bulldogs were awarded a penalty kick, and Arni Pjeturrson converted the kick to tie the game at 2-2 at 87:12. Just two minutes later, Scott Bertram tapped in a cross from Kari Arnason right in front of the UNLV goal to put Gonzaga up 3-2, its first lead of the game, at 89:14. The goal marked the second straight game the Rebels have lost a game by one after allowing a score in the final minute.
In the second game, Cal State Northridge outshot New Mexico 20-10 on the way to the easy 4-0 victory. Yossi Raz started the scoring as he converted a penalty kick at the 4:54 mark. The Matadors then added three goals in the second half. Willie Sims went one-on-one with the goalie and got a shot off at 55:26 for a 2-0 lead. Ryan Rossi added a score at 74:59, and then after another Rossi shot was blocked by New Mexico goalie Andrew Weber, Joshua LeRoy collected the rebounded and shot from 10 yards out for the fourth goal of the game at 76:57.
