MORAGA, Calif. - Sophomore guard Sheena Moore tied a school record with seven three-pointers on her way to a career-high 26 points, helping UNLV roll to an 89-57 victory at St. Mary's in women's collegiate basketball action from McKeon Pavilion in Moraga, Calif., on Saturday night. The Lady Rebels won their fifth straight and ninth in their last 10 games in improve to 10-2 on the season, while St. Mary's fell to 7-6.
Moore, who hit her first four shots from three-point range, finished 7-of-10 from behind the arc, tying the school record also held by Erin Johansson (twice) and Constance Jinks. RanDee Henry, the Mountain West Conference's leading scorer, added 21 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the field. UNLV shot 54.1 percent from the field, and 50 percent (9-of-18) from three-point range. The Lady Rebels also outrebounded St. Mary's 36-25, and forced 21 turnovers while recording 11 steals.
The Lady Rebels started out on fire in the first half, as they nailed eight of their first 11 shots from the field. UNLV was sparked by the play of Moore, who hit four treys and finished the half with 13 points. The Lady Rebels led by three, 11-8, when back-to-back Moore treys and a three-pointer from InFini Robinson gave them a 20-10 advantage. Up 26-18, UNLV closed out the half on a 15-5 run for a 41-23 advantage.
St. Mary's fought back to open the second half, cutting the lead to just 14, 48-34, with 16:25 left. UNLV then put the game away with a 21-4 run over the next 4:56, taking a 69-38 advantage on Robinson's layup at the 11:29 mark. The Lady Rebels would lead by as much as 34 points before finishing with the 32-point victory, their second largest win of the season.
Also finishing in double figures for UNLV was Sherry McCracklin, who tallied 13 points, eight rebounds, two blocks, and four steals, and Nikki Hitchens with 12 points. St. Mary's was paced by Triola Jackson with 16 points, while Evynn Van Burger added 14. Savannah Williams came off the bench with 10 points, and Serena Benavente registered nine points and six assists. The Gaels were just 1-of-11 from downtown, and forced just 14 UNLV turnovers.
The Lady Rebels will return to action on Sunday, January 11, as close out their non-conference schedule with a home contest against Northern Arizona at 3 pm in the Cox Pavilion, the first of a four-game homestand for UNLV.
