LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men's soccer team plays its fourth ranked opponent of the season as the Rebels will take on No. 2 New Mexico on Sunday in Albuquerque, N.M. It will be the first conference road game for UNLV this year, they were a perfect 3-0 on the road in the MPSF last season, including a 2-0 win at New Mexico. In fact, the Rebels have won four of the last five meetings between the two.
UNLV has already played No. 18 Washington (3-0 loss) and No. 6 UCLA (1-0 loss in overtime) before last week's 4-0 loss at No. 2 UC Santa Barbara, who has since risen to the top ranking in the polls. While the Rebels won last year at New Mexico, a 2-0 win, the Lobos are off to their best start in school history. They bring a 6-0 record into the game, which includes a 1-0 win over then No. 1 Indiana, and the No. 5 ranking is the highest in team history. New Mexico is also one of just three undefeated teams left in the nation.
Jeff Rowland paces the Lobos with eight goals and 16 points, which ranks first in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and tenth in the nation. Hans Bevers is also leading the league in assists with four. In goal is Andrew Weber, second in the MPSF with an 0.80 goals against average.
The Rebels are 1-6 on the season, with the one win coming over Navy. UNLV has two goals this year, from Rod Dyachenko and Herbert Flores, while Peter Clitheroe has played the majority of time in goal.
