PALO ALTO, Calif. - UNLV women's golf finished the first round of the 42 Annual Stanford/Pepsi Intercollegiate Showdown in 17th place Friday at the Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif. The Rebels shot 302 as a team (+22) to finish 20 strokes behind first-round leader Arizona State, which shot a 282 (+2) to grab the first round lead.
Elena Kurokawa led the Rebels, rolling in a first-round total of 74 (+4) to finish in a tie for 38th. Seema Sadekar finished the first day in 46th (75, +5), Allison Chell came in 59th (76 +6), Tina Mabanta was 66th (77, +7) and Young Pak rounded out the Rebels with a 75th finish (79 +9).
Pepperdine and Washington trailed first-round leader ASU by two strokes after both teams opened with rounds of 284 (+4). UCLA was fourth (287, +7) and Arizona was fifth (289, +9).
Rachel Kyono of Pepperdine and Paige MacKenzie of Washington set the first round pace with a three-under 67. Anastasia Kostina of Washington State was third (68, -2) and a group of eight were tied in fourth with an even-par round of 70.
Second round play begins tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. (PDT).
