HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - UNLV trailed Texas 3-2 late Sunday afternoon as darkness suspended the first day of the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championships, held at Mission Inn Resort Golf Course in Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla.
Earlier in the day the 16-seeded Rebels lost to top-seeded and No. 1-ranked Duke 4-1-0 in the opening round of the tournament. Teams were supposed to play 36-holes in the opening day of the tournament, but play was suspended at 5:15 p.m. (EST) on the par-72, 7,343-yard course.
The second round will resume at 8:00 a.m. (EST) on Monday morning, with third-round action beginning an hour after the conclusion of the second round.
Before the sun had set on the first day of the tournament, Rebel sophomore Seema Sadekar was three up on Texas' Julie Best through ten holes and Elena Kurokawa of the Rebels was one up against Brittany Givilancz of the Longhorns. Texas held leads in the other three matches against UNLV as Jordan Craig led Hwanhee Lee (two up through 10 holes), Perry Swenson led Allison Chell (one up through 11 holes) and Devan Anderson led Young Pak (one up through nine holes).
In the Rebels' opening round match against the top-ranked Blue Devils, only Kurokawa broke through for a victory in her match, defeating Duke's Brittany Lang 2 and 1. The four other matches went to Duke players as Elizabeth Janangelo defeated UNLV's Tina Mabanta 2 and 1, Anna Grzebien beat Lee 4 and 3, Niloufar Aazam-Zanganeh beat Sadekar 2 and 1 and Jennifer Pandolfi beat Chell 5 and 4.
Throughout the rest of the bracket in opening-round play, Furman defeated Texas 4-1-0, Washington beat Purdue 3-1-1, Arizona defeated UCLA 4-1-0, Arizona State upended Texas A&M 2-1-2, Wake Forest beat Tennessee 3-2-0, Florida defeated New Mexico 3-2-0 and Oklahoma State beat North Carolina 3-1-1.
