Nov. 15, 2004

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - UNLV won twice Monday to advance to the Consolation A Championship of the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship at Mission Inn Resort at Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla.

The Rebels battled back from an early 3-2 deficit to beat Texas, completing their second round match which had started Sunday but was delayed due to darkness.

Rebel golfers Elena Kurokawa, Hwanhee Lee and Seema Sadekar each won their matches against the Longhorns, as UNLV rebounded after losing to No. 1-ranked Duke 4-1-0 to open the tournament. Young Pak and Allison Chell both lost their matchups against Texas, but were picked up by their Rebel teammates.

Although the Rebels tied the Boilermakers 2-2-1 in UNLV's next match, the tie-breaker went to the Rebels because they won more holes (12-6) on the par-72, 7,343-yard course.

Lee won her match against Purdue's Caroline Husse 6 and 4 and Lee beat Onnarin Sattayabanphot 6 and 4 to win their matches by a combined 12 holes. In the Boilermakers' two wins, Whitney Frykman beat Sadekar 2 and 1 and Maria Stinson beat UNLV's Tina Mabanta 4 and 3, winning their two matches by a combined six holes. Kurokawa, who has not lost a match during the tournament, halved her round with Myrte Eikenaar, creating the tie.

UNLV now plays Mountain West Conference rival New Mexico, which has beaten North Carolina (4-1-0) and Tennessee (2-2-1) after losing to Florida (3-2-0) to open the tournament. The Rebels beat the Lobos by two strokes at last year's MWC Championships, ending New Mexico's four-year reign as league champions.

Duke will play Arizona State for the Match Play Championship, as the final round gets underway Tuesday morning at 8:00 a.m. (EST) with a shotgun start.
