LAS VEGAS - After a slow start, UNLV scored 80 points over the final thirty minutes to top the West Coast All-Stars 93-70 in a women's college basketball exhibition contest on Friday night from the Thomas & Mack Center.
Senior forward RanDee Henry and junior guard Sheena Moore, two-thirds of the UNLV "Big Three" combined for 55 points to lead the team, as the Lady Rebels shot 62.9% in the second half while outscoring West Coast 54-30. They were playing without the third member of the Big Three, senior forward Sherry McCracklin, sitting out with an ankle injury.
UNLV struggled from the floor to begin the game however, missing its first four shots while falling behind 14-1 after the first five minutes. The Lady Rebels settled down, and slowly cut into the lead. After Angela Garrett converted a layup with 2:55 left in the first stanza to make the score 38-25, Moore finally woke up the offense for UNLV. Having missed her first four shots of the game, she hit sandwiched two treys around a Amy Loftus layup, and RanDee Henry finished off a layup with one second left on the clock to give the Lady Rebels a 14-2 run to end the half.
Six straight points to begin the second half gave UNLV its first lead of the game, 45-40. West Coast came back to tie the score twice, the last at 47-47, but eight straight points from Henry sparked a 13-0 run to make the score 60-47 with 11:06 left in the game. The Lady Rebels then blew the game open with a 20-3 run, taking their largest lead of the game at 25 points, 91-66, off a free throw from Brittney Thomas with 1:29 on the clock.
Henry led all scorers with 31 points on 13-of-20 shooting, and added 14 rebounds for a double-double. Moore finished 10-of-17 from the floor for 24 points. Off the bench, Nejlah Clark added nine points, four assists, and four steals, while Kisha Lee posted eight. UNLV shot 52.8 percent (38-72) for the game, and held a 46-32 edge on the boards.
West Coast was paced by LaShaunda Fowler with 17 points, while Candace Baldwin poured in 14 and Angela Garrett 11. They shot 50 percent in the first half (16-32), but were held to just 35.7 percent in the second (10-28), and 43.3 for the game (26-60). They also turned the ball over 25 times.
UNLV will open the regular season on Sunday, Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. against No. 14 Minnesota in the first game of the WBCA/BTI Classic in Seattle, Wash., on the campus of the University of Washington. The Lady Rebels will then take on South Carolina on the second day of the classic at 5 p.m. on Nov. 15.
