LAS VEGAS - UNLV freshman and Las Vegas native Sequoia Holmes scored all 13 of her points in the second half and came up with a crucial steal and basket in the final 30 seconds to help lift the Lady Rebels over in-state rival Nevada, Reno 66-60 in women's collegiate basketball action on Wednesday night from the Thomas & Mack Center. With the win, UNLV goes into the Christmas break with a 5-5 record and improves to 10-0 all-time against UNR in Las Vegas, while the Wolf Pack fell to 4-5.
The Lady Rebels led for the majority of the second half, but never by more then six points. Andrea Sitton scored four straight points to cut a 56-51 lead to just one point with 4:03 left, and Amber Young made the first of two free throws to bring the Wolf Pack within two, 62-60, with 1:21 to play. The teams then missed shots on its next two possessions, and Nejlah Clark was fouled on a defensive rebound, and send to the line for two shots. She missed both and Young came up with the rebound, but Holmes quickly stole the ball, laid it in, and was fouled on the play. She missed the free throw, but Talisha Anderson missed two straight treys on the other end, and Sheena Moore hit two free throws for UNLV with six seconds left for the 66-60 victory.
The first half was a tight affair as well, with 10 ties and seven lead changes. The Wolf Pack were forced into 20 turnovers for the game, while UNLV committed a season-low 11. UNR made up for it by shooting 48.8% (21-34) from the floor, and 88.2% (15-17) from the line, not missing a free throw until the final five minutes. UNLV was also outrebounded for the first time in seven games, 31-24.
Henry led the Lady Rebels with 21 points and seven rebounds. Holmes finished with a career-high 13, and was a perfect 5-of-5 in the second half. Moore joined the two in double figures with 11.
UNR was paced by Anderson with 13 points, with Sitton and Traci Graham both chipping in 10. Young added nine points and eight rebounds.
UNLV returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 30, hosting Central Connecticut State at 7 pm in the Cox Pavilion, the fourth game of a seven-game homestand.
