PALO ALTO, Calif. - Despite suffering through four rain delays, top-ranked Stanford dropped just one set en route to defeating UNLV 7-0 in women's tennis Friday at the Taube Tennis Center.
The 38th-ranked Lady Rebels fell to 3-1 while the Cardinal improved to a perfect 7-0. Stanford, which boasted two duos ranked in the nation's top 20, began by sweeping all three doubles matches for one team point.
In singles play, preseason No. 2 Amber Liu eased by Gyorgyi Zsiros 6-1, 6-3 at the top position. In fact, the day's only three-setter came on Court Four where UNLV sophomore Cindy Treber challenged 20th-ranked Lauren Barkinow before ultimately falling 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-3).
"We fought hard and were in almost all of the first sets," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "I liked our effort in some unpleasant playing conditions vs. a great team."
The competition doesn't get much easier as UNLV will face No. 4 California Saturday in Berkeley.
