AUSTIN, Texas - The No. 22 UNLV women's golf team not only held its ground during the second round of the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational on Monday, but they made up three shots on the host and overall leader Texas. Heading into Tuesday's final round at The Hills Country Club (Par 72, 6,248 Yards), the Rebels trail the 19th-ranked Longhorns by just a single stroke.
The Rebels shot 314 for the day, one stroke worse than Sunday's opening round score yet still good enough to be the second-best team score of the day. Only California's 311 topped the Rebels score on the day. The Golden Bears sit five shots behind UNLV.
The Rebels have been on an impressive tear this spring, marked by a fifth-place finish at the Arizona's Wildcat Invitational and a runner-up showing at San Jose State's Spartan Invitational. However, the field at the Betsy Rawls is perhaps even more impressive, featuring 13 teams ranked in the top 40 and seven in the top 20. Presently, the Rebels have a lead on No. 4 California, No. 7 Arizona, No. 9 Vanderbilt, No. 11 Southern California, No. 13 Tulsa, No. 16 Oklahoma and No. 20 North Carolina.
The Rebels success is due largely, in part, to sophomore Sunny Oh. Oh is just four strokes off the lead of Vanderbilt's Chris Brady, who is five-over par after two rounds.
Sophomore Elena Kurokawa is also in contention, seven shots behind Brady. Kurokawa matched the 77s scored by both Oh and Brady, and she climbed to ninth on the leaderboard.
Seema Sadekar's 79 and Hwanhee Lee's 80 rounded out the team's 314. Young Pak, who scored an impressive 77 in her opening round, shot 90 on the day.
In its third year as a program at UNLV, the Rebel golf team seeks its third win over that span. UNLV already has victories at the 2003 BYU Dixie Classic and the 2003 Northwest Invitational.
Final round play at The Hills Country Club will begin with an 8:00 a.m. CST shotgun start.
