LAS VEGAS - UNLV and Air Force will play the season's first Mountain West Conference football game on Sept. 18, the league announced as part of its release of the 2004 schedule Thursday.
Overall, the Rebels will face five bowl teams, host the annual Battle for the Fremont Cannon vs. Nevada, Reno and renew a rivalry with former Big West Conference team Utah State. Season tickets are now on sale by calling (702) 739-FANS. Prices for the five-game home package are $60 in the end zone and $120 for sideline seating. The decreased prices reflect one less home game in 2004.
Individual tickets, which will not go on sale until August 1, will continue to be priced at $13 (end zone) and $26 (sideline) for all games, which does not include a $2 per-ticket facility fee.
UNLV will open its 37th season of football by making a second-ever trip to play Tennessee on Sept. 4. The Volunteers' Neyland Stadium is the third-largest collegiate stadium in the nation and was site of the biggest crowd to ever watch a UNLV football game (106,212 in 1996).
That will be followed by a return trip to Wisconsin, where the Rebels upset the Badgers 23-5 a year ago before 78,043 fans at Camp Randall Stadium. UW will return the game when it travels to Las Vegas in 2007.
Starting with the Air Force game, UNLV will then hit a stretch that sees four of the next five dates taking place at Sam Boyd Stadium. On Sept. 25, the Rebels will meet Utah State for the 16th time but for the first time since 1995. UNR comes to town on Oct. 2 with the hosts looking to even the all-time series between the rivals at 15 apiece.
On Oct. 9, UNLV will return to play BYU at LaVell Edwards Stadium for the first time since downing the Cougars there 24-3 in 2002. Las Vegas Bowl participant New Mexico is next up with a return trip to Sam Boyd on Oct. 16. The Rebels will travel to play Utah on Oct. 23 looking for their first win over the Utes since 1979. After enjoying the season's only off week on Oct. 30, UNLV finishes its home schedule looking for a sixth straight victory over Wyoming on Nov. 6.
The Rebels will then close their season with two away games, Nov. 13 at Colorado State and Nov. 20 at San Diego State. It will mark the fifth consecutive season that UNLV completes its regular season away from home but only the second time in six years and first time since 2001 that the team will finish by Thanksgiving weekend.
