SUNRIVER, Ore. - The No. 20 UNLV women's golf team scored 291 in the second round of the Mountain West Conference Championship and leads by one stroke over New Mexico heading into Saturday's final round.

The Rebels held a two-stroke edge over the four-time defending champions after Thursday's first round, but the Lobos shot 290 as a team to trim the lead to one shot.

Sophomore Elena Kurokawa, who led when the day began, followed her first-round 68 with a five-over par 76. She slipped to fifth place at two-over par.

BYU's Margaret Gibby assumed the role Kurokawa had filled, shooting 70 for the second straight day at the par-71, 5,851-yard Meadows Course at Sunriver Resort. She sits two strokes ahead of the New Mexico duo of Shannon Johnson and Katrina Leckovic.

Just behind those three is Rebel ace Sunny Oh, who charged ahead three spots on the leaderboard with a 70 of her own. Oh is one-over for the tournament.

A single stroke behind Oh is Kurokawa and fellow Rebel Hwanhee Lee, who shot 72 for the second straight day. Lee marks the third Rebel to crowd into the top five.

Sophomore Young Pak rounded out the Rebel team score, shooting 73 on the day. She climbed to a tie for 11th overall. Freshman Seema Sadekar's 77 was discarded.

Should the Rebels hold off New Mexico in Saturday's final round, it would mark the first time a team other than the Lobos won the MWC crown. Play begins at 10:00 a.m. PDT.
