LAS VEGAS - UNLV had several strong chances to pull off a huge upset, but it was a defensive mistake that decided the game as an own goal lifted sixth-ranked UCLA to a 1-0 overtime win over the Rebels on the second day of the UNLV FILA Men's Soccer Invitational on Sunday afternoon from Peter Johann Field. In the second game of the day, No. 13 Washington scored twice in a five-minute span to hold off No. 18 Creighton 2-1.
Both teams had scoring opportunities in the first 90 minutes, but UNLV goalie Peter Clitheroe and Bruin goalkeeper Nate Pena each turned in strong performances to keep the game scoreless. In the beginning of overtime, UNLV stopped a UCLA scoring advance, but when the Rebel defender kicked the ball back towards Clitheroe, he misjudged his kick and sent the ball past Clitheroe into the goal giving UCLA the victory at the 90:37 mark.
Clitheroe finished with eight saves in goal, while Pena collected six. UNLV falls to 1-3 on the year with the loss, while UCLA improves to 3-1.
In the second game, Washington (4-1) scored two goals in the middle of the second half, and held off a charge by Creighton (3-1) at the end for the win. Brett Hite scored the first goal, taking a pass in the box from Casey Armstrong eight yards out from the goal and send the ball to the back of the net for a 1-0 Huskie lead at 50:24. Just four minutes later, Evan Cummings took a shot that rebounded off CU goalie Andrew Brown, collected his rebound and shot again for a score and a 2-0 Washington edge at 54:29. Creighton would cut the lead to one at 83:55 on a score from Brian Biggerstaff's shot off a rebounded save, but the Huskies would hold on for the 2-1 win. WU goalie Chris Eylander finished with eight saves, while Brown posted four.
UNLV will next play on Wednesday, Sept. 22, as the Rebels open their Mountain Pacific Sports Federation schedule with a home contest against San Diego State on 7 pm at Peter Johann Field.
