Las Vegas - UNLV junior Elena Kurokawa shot a 72 to finish in a tie for seventh place at one-under par and the Rebel women's golf team is in sixth place with a score of 297 (+5) in the first round of the 26th Annual Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.
Kurokawa was one of 11 players to finish their round under par, and trails leader Kelly Froelich of Georgia by four shots. Froelich shot a five-under 68 to set the early pace, as the Bulldogs are the only squad to finish under par as a team with a score of 287 (-5) after one day on the links.
Rebels Hwanhee Lee, Young Pak and Seema Sadekar all shot 75 (+2) and are in a 17-way tie for 28th. Tina Mabanta rounded out the team with an 82 (+9). The top four individual scores are added to get the overall team results.
New Mexico trails leader Georgia by five strokes, as the Lobos combined to shoot an even-par 292. Pepperdine and Oklahoma State are in a tie for third with a combined total of 293 (+1) and BYU is in fifth with a 296 (+4), one stroke ahead of the Rebels.
Two rounds remain in the 54-hole three-day event at the par-73 UNM Championship Course that covers 6,069 yards. Tee times Tuesday and Wednesday will begin at 8:30 am (MST).
