LAS VEGAS - UNLV freshman forward Jessica Destito made the first goal of her collegiate career a memorable one, as she scored a golden goal with just five minutes left in the second overtime to lift the Rebels to a 1-0 win over Northern Arizona in women's collegiate soccer action on Friday night from Peter Johann Field. With the win, UNLV moves to 2-1 on the season, while NAU falls to 0-1-1.
The game was the second of the day in the UNLV FILA Classic, and the second to go into two overtimes, as Kent State and Montana played to a double-overtime 1-1 tie in the first contest.
The Rebels held a large advantage on shots taken for the majority of the game, finishing with a 28-13 edge, but couldn't manage to get past Lumberjack goalie Andrea Berra, who finished with eight saves in the game. UNLV would prevail on the night when Tanya Roberts fed a streaking Destito on the right side of the field, and Destito raced past two NAU defenders inside the box and crossed a shot into the left post for the score at the 105:09 mark. Rebel goalkeeper Jenna Huff finished with seven saves to record her first shutout of the season and 12th in her career.
In the first game, Kent State went up early on a goal from Kimberly Dimitroff at 18:08 after dribbling past two defenders and placing a shot in the right corner. Montana would tie the game however at 42:08 on a Tara Schwager 30-yard blast. Nikki Bolstad assisted on the Grizzlies goal. The teams both had chances in the second half and overtime periods, but the game would end in a tie, leaving both teams with a 2-0-1 record.
The UNLV FILA Classic concludes on Sunday, as the Rebels will take on Montana at Noon, while Kent State and Northern Arizona face off at 2:30 pm.
