LAS VEGAS - Three Lady Rebels finished with a double-double and UNLV scored over 90 for the second straight game in a 92-66 victory over Canisius in women's collegiate basketball action on Sunday afternoon from the Cox Pavilion. It was the third straight win for UNLV, improving them to 7-5 on the year, while Canisius fell to 4-6.
Six players finished in double figures for the Lady Rebels, the most since placing five in double figures in an 81-61 win over San Diego State on Feb. 15. Leading the way was senior forward RanDee Henry with her third straight double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds. Finishing with their first career double-doubles was junior guard Sheena Moore with 12 points and a career-high 10 assists, and freshman forward Sequoia Holmes with 14 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. Also in double figures was Nikki Htichens with 16, while Shana Coleman and Latosha Pace both finished with 13.
Coming off a 92-52 win over Central Connecticut State on Thursday, this marks the first time the Lady Rebels have posted back-to-back games of 90+ points since the 1993-94 season, with a 92-49 win at UC Irvine and a 92-64 win at Cal State Fullerton.
Canisius scored the first basket of the game, but that was the only lead the Golden Griffins would hold. With UNLV up 12-9, Henry scored six points during a 11-3 run, and the Lady Rebels would led by as much as 17 in the first half before taking a 43-29 advantage into halftime.
The lead hovered between 14-20 points for the opening 10 minutes of the second half. After Jessica Steeves' layup made the score 67-50 with 9:47 to play, UNLV sealed the game with a 18-4 run over a 4:02 span, capped by Holmes' three-point play with 5:45 left for an 85-54 lead.
UNLV shot 47.6% for the game, and were 27-of-38 from the line. The Lady Rebels held a 47-39 edge on the boards, and forced 23 turnovers while committing 18, and posted 20+ assists for the second straight game with 21.
The Griffs were paced by Karly Chesko, who came off the bench to hit 4-of-8 from downtown and finished with 19 points. Becky Zak added 14, while Megan Lyte poured in 10. Canisius was held to 36.9% from the floor, though hit 8-of-24 from behind the arc.
UNLV continues its seven-game homestand with a Saturday afternoon contest in the Cox Pavilion against High Point at 3 pm.
