Air Force Academy, Colo. - UNLV (7-8, 3-1 MWC) maintained its dominance over Air Force (4-14, 0-4 MWC) on Saturday night with its 12th-straight win over the Falcons. The Rebels rolled over the Falcons in four games, while suffering its only hiccup in game three at the Cadet East Gym. UNLV was lead by 21 kills from Lauren Miramontes and double-doubles by Michelle Banks and Melody Nua. The Rebels won the four-game match with scores of 30-16, 30-25, 28-30, 30-19.
For the fourth time in Mountain West Conference history UNLV swept its New Mexico-Air Force road swing. In the previous six years of MWC existence UNLV has taken the two-match road trip in 2000, 2001 and 2004.
UNLV set a season-high tally with its .379 hitting percentage. In the three games that the Rebels won, the team never hit below .359 (game two). In game one, the squad hit for a team-high game total of .500 (15 kills, one error, 28 total attempts).
The Rebels out hit the Falcons .379-to-.145 and had 13 more kills than their host (69-to-56). Air Force made 17 more errors than UNLV (33-to-16) and had 19 more attacking attempts (159-to-140).
Miramontes hit for the 10th time this season in double-digits with 21 on the evening. Although she had the highest kill figure her .432 hitting percentage was third-best among all Rebels. Michelle Banks hit for a match-high .625 average with 10 kills and no errors in 16 attempts. Banks earned her fourth double-double as she collected a match-high 18 digs, as well. Brittani Lumsden added 10 kills and seven digs to the UNLV output.
Melody Nua added her fourth double-double of the season as she assisted on 53 kills and dug out 10 Air Force attacks. Nua tied her season-high of six kills in the match and hit for a .600 mark (six kills, no errors, 10 attempts). Jada Walker rounded out the three Rebels with double-digits in the dig department with her 14.
Air Force's offense was led by Brooke Akers and Rebecca Gallegos as the tallied 20 and 19 kills, respectively. Akers and Gallegos combined for 39 of the Falcons' 56 kills in the match. Akers led the team with a .350 hitting percentage, as the team had its highest mark in the third game with a .300 total. In the three games that Air Force lost, the team hit no higher than .143. Carly Stefken led the Falcons with 46 assists. Kristina Stewart and Rebecca Gerton tied for the team lead with nine digs apiece.
Up next for UNLV is a two-match home stand to be played over the next two Friday nights. On Oct. 7, the Rebels come home to the Cox Pavilion to host the San Diego Aztecs and on Oct. 8, TCU pays its first schedule MWC visit to Las Vegas. Both matches are scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
