ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - UNLV is quickly regaining its form from last year after their sixth game of the year with Jenna Huff in the net, as the senior goalkeeper helped the Rebels set a new Mountain West Conference record with their fourth straight shutout in conference play, 2-0 at New Mexico on Sunday afternoon in women's soccer action. The win gave UNLV its' first-ever 4-0 start in conference play, with all four wins coming on the road, and are tied with Utah for first place. The Rebels are 9-4-3 overall, while Lobos fell to 4-5-4, 1-2-1 in league play.
It was the Rebels' sixth straight shutout overall, which is currently the longest streak in the nation, and they have not allowed a goal in their last six conference regular season games, dating back to the 2004 season. UNLV's previous record for consecutive overall shutouts was four, while the conference record was three. Huff missed the first 10 games of the year with a broken foot, but played in the second half for three straight games before playing the entire 90 minutes the last three contests, and the Rebels have not allowed a goal since she made her return.
Junior forward Tanya Roberts put the Rebels on the scoreboard just before the end of the first half, taking a pass from Katie Carney and one-timing a shot to the back of the net from 15 yards out at 44:17. Senior defender Nickie Olson then added an insurance goal for UNLV in the 58th minute, knocking in a shot off a corner kick by Angie Inzana for a 2-0 lead.
The Rebels held a slight edge on shots, 14-11, and 5-4 on corner kicks, but it was in goal that UNLV made the difference. Huff finished the contest with six saves, and increased her school career shutout record to 23. The Rebels also extended to 540 minutes their streak of not allowing a goal. Lobo goalie Shannon Adragna, playing in place of Kristen Winters who sat out the game after receiving a red card on Friday night, finished with four saves and two goals allowed.
The Rebels will finish the regular season with three straight conference games at home, beginning this week with a pair of key games against 16th-ranked BYU on Thursday at 7 pm, followed by a Saturday afternoon contest against fellow MWC co-leader Utah on Saturday at 1 pm. Both games will be at Peter Johann Field.
