Reno, Nev. - The Rebels (9-9) suffered their first loss of October tonight against its in-state rival in Reno, Nev., and had its four-game winning streak snapped. UNLV and Nevada, Reno took turns winning the first four games, but UNR ran away with the fifth game to even the all-time series at seven games apiece. The Wolf Pack (13-6) has now won five straight in the series dating back to the 2001 season. UNR took the five-game match with scores of 27-30, 30-22, 21-30, 30-25, 15-8.
UNR out hit the Rebels .278-to-.191 and racked up eight more kills (76-to-68) in the match. All five games went to the team with the highest hitting percentage and with the least amount of errors. The Wolf Pack made all of its won games count as they hit for percentages of .289, .404 and .500 in the three victories, while UNLV hit for an average of .045, .250 and .056 in the same games, respectively. In the two games the Rebels won the team hit .214 and .353 to UNR's .204 and .108.
UNLV spread its attacks around as five players racked up double-digit kill totals. Lauren Miramontes led the Rebels in kills for the eighth time overall and fourth time in as many matches with her 20 kills. Miramontes' .400 hitting percentage was tops for all Rebels in the match. Maria Aladjova threw down 12 kills, while Michelle Banks (11), Jennifer Johnson (11) and Mariana Pencheva (10) closed out the Rebels with more than 10 kills. Banks picked up the lone double-double for UNLV as she added 11 digs to her 11 kills. Jada Walker tied for the match-high with 23 digs, as Melody Nua equaled the match-high for assists with 53.
UNR had six of its 11 players record kills with all six knocking down six or more for points. Of the six attacking players all but one had a hitting percentage over .250, with four over the .360 mark. Five of the players had 10+ kills with Karly Sipherd leading the way with 19. Teal Ericson followed close behind with 17 kills. Carly Sorensen (12), Brianne Davis (11) and Erika Ryan (11) rounded out the Wolf Pack attackers in double-digits. Sorensen was the lone player with a double-double as she added 13 digs. Christine Harms had 23 digs for the team lead and Tristin Johnson had 53 assists.
Up next for UNLV are road contests at Utah and BYU this upcoming Friday and Saturday, respectively. Each match will begin at 6 p.m. Pacific.
