Oct. 19, 2005

LAS VEGAS - UNLV will send a half-dozen singles players and three doubles teams to compete in the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Women's West Regional Championships that will be staged Oct. 20-24 at the Barnes Tennis Center on the campus of San Diego State.

Leading the way for the Lady Rebels will be 24th-ranked Elena Gantcheva who is seeded second after posting a 9-2 record in tournament play this fall, including downing the nation's No. 1-ranked player earlier this month in the All-American Championships. After a first-round bye, Gantcheva will face the winner of a match between Tamara Tanner of Loyola Marymount and Ali Borowicz of UC Irvine.

Joining the sophomore standout from UNLV will be Sharon Marin, Cindy Treber, Claire Smith, Linda Tempelfelde and Mery Contstanti.

In doubles, Gantcheva and Marin, who are ranked 36th nationally, are seeded third at the event and will also enjoy a first-round bye. UNLV's two other duos will be Treber and Contstanti and Smith and Tempelfelde.

No less than 17 Wilson/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women are taking place over the last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn spots in the November 3-6 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by The Ohio State University at the Racquet Club of Columbus.
