Chung Devilish In Round One

Oct. 31, 2005

LAS VEGAS - Da Sol Chung fired a five-under 67 to tie a tournament record and the freshman leads after Monday's opening round of the fourth-annual Las Vegas Founders Collegiate Showdown, which is being played at Anthem Country Club. No. 11 UNLV is currently in fifth place after shooting a team score of 291 (+3) and the Rebels are 12 strokes behind No. 2 UCLA, which also set a tournament record with its round of 279 (-9).

Chung started her day slowly, carding six straight pars to open her round before getting her first birdie on the par-5 seventh before finishing her front nine with two more pars. She opened the back nine almost the same as her first nine, rolling in a birdie to go along with five pars to put her at two-under with three holes to go. From there Chung would birdie out to close her round at five-under, tying her for the lowest round in showdown history with Veronica Felibert of USC and Jane Chin of UC Irvine, who both shot five-under (67) at last year's tournament.

UCLA meanwhile used a total team effort to set the record for lowest round by a team, as all five Bruins in the lineup finished in the top 10, led by Jane Park's four-under 68. UCLA's score bettered the previous mark by one stroke, which was set at last year's tournament by Washington as the Huskies shot a 280 (-8). No. 23 Arizona is in second place after the first 18 holes, as the Wildcats were the only other team to finish under par with a 285 (-6). No. 4 Pepperdine and Kent State are tied for third at even-par 288 and the Rebels round out the top five.

Chung holds a one-stroke lead over Park and Amanda Wilson of Arizona, Chelsea Benton of Colorado State is in fourth place with a three-under 69 and there is a group of five players tied for fifth.

Grace Woo cracked the top 25 for the Rebels as the freshman finished tied for 24th with a one-over 73. Woo, along with Chung, are playing in their first home tournament for the Rebels and both have had strong falls, finishing in the top 25 in every tournament to start their UNLV careers. Seema Sadekar is tied for 38th after rolling in a three-over 73 and Elena Kurokawa and Allison Chell are tied for 47th as both shot a four-over 74 to round out the Rebel lineup.

Young Pak is tied for 69th (81, +9) while Erin McGough and Chelsea Pendleton finished tied for 82nd (88, +16) as the trio are playing as individuals at the tournament. Pak and McGough are seniors while Pendleton is a redshirt freshman playing in her first tournament for UNLV.

Tuesday's second round is slated to start at 8:00 a.m. (PDT) with players teeing off on both the first and 10th holes on the par-72, 6,168-yard course.
