LARAMIE, Wyo. - Sophomore midfielder Ashly O'Harrow scored her first goal of the season with just nine seconds left on the clock to give UNLV a 1-0 win at Wyoming in Mountain West Conference women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon. It was the fourth straight shutout win for the Rebels, and moves them into a tie for first place with Utah after the opening weekend of play in the MWC at 2-0, 7-4-3 overall. The host Cowgirls fell to 5-4-3, and 1-1 in league play.
The Rebels dominated the play on the field the entire game, holding an 18-9 edge on shots, including 11-2 in the opening half. However, they could not get past Cowgirl goalkeeper Ashley Sheppard, who would finish with nine saves in goal. With the game just seconds away from going into overtime, UNLV would not let up on offense, as Lori Sakai took at shot at the Wyoming goal. It was deflected by Sheppard, but Armani Rice collected the rebound and took a shot, which again was deflected by Sheppard. This time the ball came to O'Harrow, who was in the right place at the right time and sent the loose ball into the goal for the score at 89:51. It was the third game-winning goal of her career, and first this season.
Helping to preserve the shutout for the Rebels was goalkeeper Jenna Huff, who played her first entire game this season after recovering from a broken foot in the preseason. She had played the second half of the last three wins for UNLV, all shutouts as well, and recorded four saves to increase her school career shutout record to 21. The Rebels also extended to 360 minutes their streak of not allowing a goal.
The Rebels will take to the road again next weekend, as they will face TCU in Fort Worth, Texas on Friday at 2 pm (PST), followed by a Sunday 11 am (PST) contest at New Mexico in Albuquerque.
