LAS VEGAS - UNLV women's golf wrapped up its fall season Wednesday with a fifth-place finish at the Las Vegas Founders Collegiate Showdown as the Rebels finished with a three-day total of 874 (+10) at Anthem Country Club.
The story of the tournament was UCLA, which led from wire-to-wire and established a tournament record by finishing with a 24-under 840, 27 shots ahead of second-place Kent State. The previous record was held by New Mexico, which won the 2002 tournament with a score of 869 (+5). Hannah Jun led the Bruins, winning medalist honors and setting a tournament record of her own by carding a three-round total of 206 (-10).
Da Sol Chung was the Rebels' highest finisher, as the freshman tied for fifth with a total of three-under 213 after she shot a one-over 73 on Wednesday. After starting her final round with a birdie, bogey and quadruple bogey to go to plus four after three holes, Chung battled back and rolled in three birdies to get back to plus one. It was the best showing for Chung in her short Rebel career, one that already includes two seventh-place finishes.
Seema Sadekar also cracked the top 15 for the Rebels, finishing tied for 11th after an even par third round (72) left the junior at even par (216) for the tournament. Grace Woo (221, +5) shot a one-over 73 to finish tied for 28th, Elena Kurokawa (224, +8) came in tied for 38th and Allison Chell (243, +27) came in 76th. The Rebels also had three players competing as individuals, with the Young Pak having the best finish of the trio, as she came in 79th (247, +31). Chelsea Pendleton finished 80th (254, +38) and Erin McGough came in tied for 82nd place (259, +43). Pak and McGough are seniors while Pendleton is a redshirt freshman who was playing in her first tournament for UNLV.
Kent State tallied a three-round score of 867 (+3) to finish second, and the Golden Flash was followed by Pepperdine (870, +6), Arizona (872, +8) and then UNLV. Jun's teammate, Jane Park, took second individually with a total of 208 (-8), followed by Chelsea Benton of Colorado State and Tiffany Joh of UCLA (210, -6).
UNLV will now take the rest of the fall off and then resume play at the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Ariz., on Feb. 20-21.
