Last Week In Review

The two matches last weekend were instrumental in snapping history built up by the UNLV volleyball program. Heading into their match in Fort Collins, Colo., the Rebels carried a two-match winning streak and were attemtping to accomplish what no other Rebel squad had done in the past -- win in Fort Collins. Also, the Rams owned a 14-0 edge dating back to the 1999 season. Against the Wyoming Cowgirls, UNLV had won five-straight since the 2003 campaign.

In Fort Collins, UNLV and Colorado State traded wins in the first two games with the Rebels taking game one. With the match knotted at one, UNLV ran off two more game wins to break the long standing history that had built up over a six-year period and won with scores of 30-23, 26-30, 30-28, 30-25.

UNLV out hit CSU .239-to-.126 in hitting percentages and 61-to-59 in kills. The Rebels hit above the .289 mark in three of their four games, with a .350 hitting percentage coming in game three. CSU only hit above .205 on two occasions and below .100 twice (.000 in game one and .080 in game four).

In Laramie, Wyo., the Cowgirls jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with game one going extra with a 32-30 margin and game two at 30-18. The Rebels fought back to force a fourth game with a 30-21 game three win, but Wyoming stopped the match with the 30-24 game four tally.

The Rebels had one of their more impressive hitting performances, but were overshadowed by the Cowgirls' 77 kills to their own 70. Wyoming hit for a .314 average, while UNLV was close behind with .290. One of the more impressive statistics on the night was that both teams hit above the .229 mark in every game, except one (UNLV hit for a .133 average in game four). The Rebels hit for one of their highest single-game averages in their third-game win with a .581 figure (19-1-31).

In the two matches, Lauren Miramontes hit for .330 and 5.00 kills per game average with 40 kills (including a career-high 24 at Wyoming). Maria Aladjova threw down 31 kills and a team-high .410 hitting percentage. Melody Nua had 98 assists, while Jada Walker had 35 digs. Michelle Banks followed closely behind with 28 digs.
