LAS VEGAS - With the skies clearing here Saturday morning, the first round of the annual UNLV Men's Tennis Spring Invitational was played one day late at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
To make up for Friday's postponement caused by bad weather, a second round will be played late Saturday, with the finals taking place at their scheduled time on Sunday.
All matches Saturday began with singles play and ended when one team reached four points.
Host UNLV won its third straight match with a 4-1 final over Utah State in first-round action. The Rebels improved to 4-2 while the Aggies fell to 2-6.
UNLV took four of five singles matches in straight sets to clinch the victory.
Winning for the Rebels were 38th-ranked Henner Nehles at the top spot, Joel Kielbowicz at No. 2, Jonathan Hooper at No. 4 and David Campbell at No. 6 in his collegiate debut. Romain Massaro's match at No. 3 was halted with him leading in the second set. Regular Rebel starter Aviram Salomon, ranked 100th nationally, sat out the match.
UNLV will play San Francisco in the semifinal round after the Dons rallied past New Mexico State 4-3. On the other side of the draw, Southern Miss eased by Idaho State 4-0 and 72nd-ranked Denver got by Cal Poly 4-3.
