ORLANDO (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV sophomore
Ilia Snitari remained undefeated as a collegian and gave his program its first win in 18 years on Tuesday at the NCAA Division I Singles Championship being staged at the USTA National Campus.
Playing in one of the last matches of the day, Snitari lost his first set but rebounded to finish off No. 124-ranked
Shu Matsuoka of Arizona State, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the Round of 32. Ranked 83rd nationally, he improved to 11-0 this fall and 19-0 overall as a Rebel.
UNLV's other entry in the elite field, senior
Illia Maksymchuk, fell in his opening match earlier in the day, 6-1, 7-5, at the hands of 28th-ranked and 9-16 seeded
Jack Loutit of Kentucky. Two Rebels had earned spots in the 64-player field during the same season for the first time since 1996.
Snitari's victory was the first at this event by a Rebel since
Elliot Wronksi won in straight sets in 2007. Snitari can now become the first UNLV player to advance to the Round of 16 since 2002 with a win on Wednesday over Kentucky's 9-16 seeded
Eli Stephenson.
