LAS VEGAS - UNLV rallied to claim the doubles point and then used that momentum to defeat 72nd-ranked Denver 4-0 and win the UNLV Men's Tennis Spring Invitational at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Sunday.
The Rebels, who took their own tournament's title for the first time since 2002, won their sixth consecutive match to improve to 6-2 while the Pioneers fell to 6-2.
DU led on all three doubles courts to begin the morning but UNLV's No. 3 duo of Jonathan Hooper and Martin Redelinghuys came back to win 8-5. Then the No. 1 team of Henner Nehles and Aviram Salomon won a tiebreaker to clinch the doubles point 9-8 and improve the senior duo's record to 10-0 this season. The second match was then halted.
In singles play, Nehles, ranked 38th, made quick work of Adam Holmstrom at the top position, 6-2, 6-3. Jonathan Hooper on No. 5 and David Campbell at No. 6, both freshmen, also won in straight sets to secure the team victory as the remaining three single matches were halted.
"I am extremely proud of this team for not losing focus and getting the job done over a tough Denver squad," UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook said. "We were down early in doubles and all three teams fought back. That really carried over into singles. Henner Nehles was especially impressive with his performance in singles over a quality opponent."
UNLV next hosts No. 50 Oklahoma on Friday beginning at 1:30 p.m.
In other action Sunday, Southern Miss shut out San Francisco 4-0 in the third-place match while New Mexico State defeated Idaho State for fifth place and Cal Poly blanked Utah State to salvage seventh place.
